Components of Psychoeducational Evaluation
The comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation is used to measure an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in learning and to determine if there are specific intellectual, academic, attentional or behavioral difficulties that may be having a negative impact on academic functioning.
Each person has a unique learning style and this evaluation is designed to help assess that style so that teaching approaches can be tailored accordingly.
A person’s overall abilities and specific intellectual strengths and weaknesses are then measured against their academic achievement in several aspects of learning including reading, written language and mathematics. Measures of visual and auditory memory are also obtained. Executive functions such as attention, concentration, organization, and impulsivity are measured by looking at developmental history, current functioning and by administering a computerized measure of sustained visual attention and impulse control.
The assessment takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. Results of the information are then analyzed and a parent conference is set-up to share the results. Specific recommendations are given, as needed, in the areas of learning, attention, memory, and behavior. If accommodations or additional help is required at school, these recommendations are made. Also, assistance is available to parents and schools to set up a 504 or IEP (individualized education plan). These evaluations may also be used to help students enroll in college programs for students with learning differences.
Children and adolescents with learning differences may also qualify to receive accommodations on standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, LSAT, etc. The parents (and/or the young adult) will receive a written report approximately a week following the conference. Dr. Allen will be available to present the assessment results and recommendations with school personnel if requested by the family. The approximate cost of a full evaluation including interpretation of results and report is $1000-$1200. |
